Newsletter
THURSDAY MAY 7th 2026
Hi all and welcome to my newsletter. First and foremost, thank you for joining me here and for your continued interest in my work. You have no idea how much it means to me.
One thing you should know about me right off the bat is that I love having too much on my plate, I love being overwhelmed with work. I love the challenge of piling stuff up, having deadlines, (sometimes arbitrary ones) and then just diving in. I’ll start six projects at once just to see what sticks and which ones I can commit to. And right now, there are certainly a few on the go, but the one I’ll be talking about here is my Dépanneur project.
Now, for non-Montrealers, that’s what we call corner stores. They’re an indelible part of our beautiful city, but they’re also struggling. In my neighbourhood alone, I’ve seen several close down in the last 12 months. Since I started painting urban landscapes, I’ve always been drawn to painting Dépanneurs, those neon lights, the signage, the history. But now I feel an imperative to capture them before they disappear. So I’ve embarked on a ridiculous plan to travel all around the city and paint 50 Dépanneurs, hoping to represent every borough and neighborhood across the island.
To make things even more challenging, I’ve decided each painting should have a unique blue, so 50 blues across the whole project. Blue has been such an important part of my work, and I have no plans to give up the colour anytime soon. One blue vs another can tell you so much about the time of day, the light, the temperature, the vibe.
This project has such a fun hook, it just seemed like a no-brainer. I have since learned through my contacts at my scanning site and my printshop, that capturing and reproducing blues digitally is, how you say, a bitch. Reproducing each piece and each unique blue is not going to be easy, but as I mentioned, I love a good challenge. So we’ll see how that all goes. Prints may take longer to pump out than expected. When they're ready, you'll be the first to know.
While I have you, here is an older piece of mine. It's hard for any artist to pick favourites, but this might be mine and frankly it started the whole Dépanneur project. Six months after completing the piece, I returned to the site only to find the Dépanneur no longer exists. I really hope someone has that beautiful “Biere” sign in their living room.
The Dépanneur is gone, and the original painting has been sold, but you’ll be happy to know that there are prints.
Prints of this piece, and others, are available through Sebastian Foster and I encourage you to check out what’s there, from myself and any of the other incredible artists in the roster. But I thought I should mention, I have in my possession FOUR PRINTS LEFT of a limited run of 50 and I would like to offer them to my subscribers at a considerable discount. If interested, please reach out and let me know.
And besides all that, I want to thank you again. Depanneur no. 7 is currently on the go, along with a few other things I look forward to sharing in my next newsletter, so stay tuned!
